PHP Configuration Issues

I have installed a plugin (Simple Calendar) that suggests I increase my PHP allocation (currently 40MB). I'm using Dreamhost. they suggest I use FTP or SSH. since I don't see the hosting settings, how do I access SSH in the dashboard. so when I change the settings, which one to use (FTP or SSH) causes less damage?
