Excessive server load

Yesterday I had a large number of visits to my website from foreign IP addresses. It didn't feel like these were normal accesses as there was a server overload and the site slowed down and even became inaccessible a couple times.

Do I need to do anything about it, and how do I recognize and block this malicious traffic?
